Are you ready for Modern Warfare Gear Solid Part 3? I am so ready. It is not called Special Sauce, I just named it that because it should really be epic! Micah Moore, Rick Burnett, and Blake Faucette have been working their butts off to make this happen.

Bullies, Star Wars, and Crayons

Today marks the last day of the Anti-Bullying Week in Schools, but that does not mean it’s not happening everyday all around us. Today, I want to share with you a sweet and inspiring story of Katie, a first grader. Katie is a Star Wars fan. When I read about how she painstakingly picked out her Star Wars backpack and water bottle for the first day of school, I smile, as I reminisce about those days for me. Getting new school supplies was always a big deal, and they were chosen with Jedi precision. Every first day of school, my mother would have us stand in front of “the” tree. It was a nice thick, sycamore tree with flaky bark that sat on our front yard.  We took all our school photos there. It was a proud moment. One photo that seems appropriate for this post is one of me and my big, oversized yellow Crayola crayon backpack, with 64 colors. Every one of those different colors could be someone’s favorite. There is no wrong or right color. Continue reading

Art, Chocolate, and Darth Vader?

This painting is what you get when you mix Star Wars’ Darth Vader and Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory! Wonka-Vader!

The artist Pauline Acalin says the inspiration for the painting stems back from her childhood. “As a kid, every time Willy Wonka said ‘wonkavator’, this is what I imagined in my mind. This is a sort of attempt at Wonka-Vader.”

Pretty cool! Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

If you like this post, please share it! Thanks! :)

Sending you virtual Star Wars and Chocolate,

Our iPhone 4 Thriller – I See U

When my husband Chris got his new iPhone 4, he was like a little kid in a candy store. He was on it exploring new features so much, I figured he might as well cuddle up and sleep with it! Then one day, he turned to me and said, “I have an idea to make a short thriller, with the iPhone 4.” He wanted to play around with it and see what it can do. Being the actress that I am, I thought sure, why not! So, with some help from our friend Rick Burnett, I See U was born!

Let me know what you thought! Also, if you’ve done any films with an iPhone 4 or any other mobile phone, post a link in the comments section!

Special shout out to MobileFilmz.com, a super cool site showcasing films shot with mobile phones, for posting our short!

Geek of the Week Spotlight!

While I don’t plan on showcasing a new Geek Girl every week, I do plan on spotlighting a geek girl from time to time! Well, the time is now! Today’s spotlight is on Melissa Carmen Casteel (@YouBredRancors). She is being honored for her incredible geekiness and for how many Star Wars items she owns! I connected with Melissa after my video Geek Girl Episode 3 Interview with Star Wars’ Ashley Eckstein, from The Clone Wars, ended up on the Her Universe Facebook page.

I decided to come up with my Geek Girl 5. So here are the five questions, ending with a video of Melissa as icing on the cake!

1- How would you define a “geek girl?”

A Geek Girl is someone who identifies as a girl/woman that is interested in some form of “geek culture” like technology, video games, comic books, sci-fi (like Star Wars!) etc. I also think being a Geek Girl is kind of a “screw you” to gender norms (Love that!) because geeky things are typically assumed to be for boys/men.

2- What’s your favorite Star Wars quote?

“Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.” -Yoda

3- If you could be in any scene in Star Wars, what would it be?

Didn’t you see me rocking out during the party on Endor at the end of Return of the Jedi after the second Death Star explodes? I was dancing with an Ewok. ;)

4- What’s your favorite Star Wars item that you own and why?

This is a tough one! My first action figure was a ROTJ Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker that I got when I was 10, so there’s a lot of sentimental value attached to that one. He’s also one of the only action figures that I ever took out of the box. I also really love my vintage 1983 ROTJ comic book and my vintage action figures.

5- What’s the geekiest thing you have ever done?

Well, besides not opening the majority of the boxes of my Star Wars toys as a kid, I’d say seeing Episode I around 20 times in the theater when I was 13. As an adult, the geekiest thing I’ve ever done is get a tattoo of R2-D2 and another tattoo of the Jurassic Park logo.

Our hats off to you Melissa! Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, and keep on geeking out!

Would you like to be the next Geek Girl spotlight to answer the Geek Girl 5? If so, leave a comment below letting us know why you would be a good spotlight and a way to contact you.

Know a Geek that would appreciate this post? Then please share this post. Tweet it, Facebook the link…  and spread the word! Thank YOU!

Arcadia’s Fight!

What right does a Geek Girl in Training have to be playing a video game tip hotline operator in Arcadia’s Fight? Well, I am fighting for the right, not to party, but to win a one year web series contract with Escapist Magazine! In order to get that, I need your help! I know I hate voting competitions just as much as you do, but this is kind of a big deal.

So after you watch the video, please go here to register. Then go back to the video to vote. (I know, they did not make it easy!) After you are registered a little popcorn box will show up on the bottom left hand side. Just click it and you are done. No need to watch the video again to vote. Although, you can watch it as many times as you like! You can vote once per day till Monday, November 8th. Time is of the essence! Out of the 74 or so videos they selected 20 videos which have made the first cut! That just means we are in the running! Yippee!

Without further ado, here is the video (They would not let me embed it.): http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/4thAnnualFilmFestival/view?video=2351

Playing a video game tip hotline operator was no easy feet for the GGIT. First off, I am only really familiar with 2 of the games, Donkey Kong and Angry Birds. (Have you every wondered why they call it Donkey Kong? Where are the donkeys? Well that is a discussion for another day!) Then I kick butt in a fight scene! It is funny to read the comments. Some of the comments flat out say that it is obvious I know kung fu. That really flatters me, because nothing could be further from the truth. lol

I would love to earn your vote and know what you think!

It would really help me if you could share this post on Facebook, Twitter, and wherever. Every vote counts! Thanks from the bottom of a Geek Girls heart!

May the force of Geek be with you,
Alena :)

Update* (November 17) – Thanks for all the kind words and support! We did not win the web series contract, but we did get an Honorable Mention Award! Maybe we will produce the web series on our own. Who knows!

A Geek Girl in Training Running Around Loose at the NC State Fair!

As a geek girl in training, I make it my mission to find (or stumble upon) geeky things in seemingly “regular” activities. What is geeky to do at the 2010 NC State Fair you ask? The Interactive Gaming Tent, of course! Bonus, you can play video games for FREE there. :)

I made it to the gaming tent with just enough time to play two Eminem songs on DJ Hero, before it closed. That was barely enough time to get in my “training” quota, but I was glad I got to play.

Geek-Girl-in-Training

Geek Girl in Training at the NC State Fair!

Think you have some gaming skills? Then head over tonight and Saturday at 6:00 p.m. for Guitar Hero Preliminary Rounds. Sunday at 4:00 p.m. is the Guitar Hero Championships.

You can find the Interactive Gaming Tent near the Folk Festival, on the Blue Ridge Road side of the fair. It is labeled building 16 on your handy dandy fair schedule.

FUN FACT: There were 275,000 copies of the NC State Fair Schedules printed this year, for a cost of $50,303.80 (wowzers), or $0.18 per copy!

Are you a Guitar Hero fan? Did you get to the Interactive Gaming Tent this year? I’d love to hear from you. As always, please share this post. Tweet it, Facebook the link…  and spread the word! Thank YOU!

Cheers,
Alena :)

A Chatroulette Public Announcement

What is chatroulette you ask? Quite simply, “Chatroulette is a website that pairs random strangers from around the world together for webcam-based conversations,” as defined by Wikipedia.

This is the first chatroulette video I ever saw. (Be advised it is not safe for work. It does contain swear words.) Merton adds an extra layer of difficulty by improvising on the piano, while doing chatroulette.

I have to admit, when Merton bust onto the scene several months ago with his hilarious videos, at the same time that Ben Folds was doing it at concerts, I thought they might be the same person. Apparently, so did a lot of people. Mashable hopefully set the rumor straight when they interviewed both of them via Skype.

To further solidify this, they came up with this video. Until both were on the screen, one might think they are doing some kind of fancy editing. But alas, I do believe they are different people, each very talented. Without further ado, here’s the public announcement…

Public announcements are meant to be shared, so please share this post. Tweet it, Facebook the link…  and spread the word! Thank YOU chatroulette fans!

May the Force of Geek Be With You,
Alena :)

Top 10 Geeky Costumes for a Geek Girl in Training!

The cool, fall breeze is in the air and you have Halloween on your brain. You want to show off your geekiness or geek girl in training-ness and still look geek chic. Here are 10 costumes to help you get your geek on.

This very unscientific list was compromised of results from internet research, Facebook and Twitter results, my husband’s input, and my own personal tastes. The list was actually very hard to whittle down to just 10. I automatically eliminated costumes that were female versions of male costumes, e.g. Ironette or a female Ghostbuster. The costume had to represent a geek girl character on its own. Plus, the costume had to be appealing to make the cut. I sometimes picked a costume that was inspired by the character and not the officially licensed one, if it was better looking. Fashion first!

10. Black Widow from Iron Man 2

This black jumpsuit from the Iron Man 2 movie reminds me of an updated version of Cat Woman. I have never seen Iron Man 1 or 2, so it is definitely on my list. (I am so behind on my geeky movies.) However, I like this costume and the people have spoken. :)

9. Princess Peach from Super Mario Brothers

Yes, it is true that I have never owned a Nintendo game system, and most of my princess knowledge is from Walt Disney. However, everybody knows Super Mario Brothers. Plus, every girl needs a reason to be pretty as a princess. Just think about how many guys will come up to you and say, “Hey it’s me, Mario.”

8. Hermione Granger from Harry Potter

Albeit a sexy version of a female wizard, but still enough to satisfy Harry Potter fans. Plus, the guys will appreciate the school girl “charm.”

7. Asajj Ventress from Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Because of my recent interview with Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, I had to include a character from the show. This one was all my husband’s picking. He said it would be good to have a villain character. This is an officially licensed Star Wars: The Clone Wars item.

6. Padme Amidala from Star Wars

Yes, back-to-back Star Wars! I had to include the beloved Padme, and this costume is hot! This is an officially licensed Star Wars costume.

5. Chun Li from Street Fighter

My real familiarity with Chun Li came from a spoof video I did, entitled, “The Truth Behind the Street Fighter Movie!”, with my Beat Down Boogie friends. I play the studio head. I like a girl that can kick a little butt!

4. Silk Spectre from Watchmen

Now, I did see Watchmen! I always loved her outfit, right down to the wig!

3. Neytiri from Avatar

There’s no doubt that the movie was a big hit and the costume seems to be just as popular. I saw quite a few Neytiri on the streets of Las Vegas, during our weddingmoon. People would pay to take a picture with them.

2. Wonder Woman from the Justice League

Geek Girl in Training

I have always been a huge fan of Wonder Woman, since I was child. Does the model look familiar? I had to include her since I was dressed as her at Dragon*Con when I participated in the Superhero Guinness Book attempt. :)

1. Slave Leia from Star Wars

No drum roll needed! Did you really think it would be anyone else? She speaks for herself. She’s a geek girl icon and worshipped by geek guys everywhere. The Slave Leia costume is the geek girls equivalent to the naughty nurse because it is hot, hot, hot!  “I don’t know who you are or where you’ve come from, but from now on you’ll do as I say, okay?” Anything you say Princess Leia! :)

Know a geek that would appreciate this list? Than please share this post. Tweet it, Facebook the link…  and spread the word! Thank YOU! Have a fun and sexy Halloween!

May the Force of Geek Be With You,
Alena :)
